The Local Authority (LA) is responsible for the control of admissions to the school and this will be coordinated by them using a common application form and timetable.
By law, children have to start school by the beginning of the school term after their fifth birthday (this is when they reach compulsory school age). The local authority’s policy is to encourage schools to admit four year olds so that as many children as possible will have at least eight terms in Key Stage 1. The decision on whether or not to admit four year olds is made and reviewed annually by the Head of School and in consultation with the Governors.
The number of places available is determined by the physical capacity of the school and is called the ‘Agreed Admissions number’. Our published admissions number is 30. The LEA, in consultation with the Executive Head and Head of School, may set a higher figure for a particular year group. The law gives parents the right to state a preference for any school, but not automatic choice. If your preference is St John’s School, a place will be offered if there are vacancies. In 2019 / 2020 if the school is over-subscribed, the following criteria will be taken into account in the order listed below:
- Children in the care of Kent County Council.
- Current Family Association (sibling link)
- Health and Special Access Reasons
- Nearness of children’s homes and ease of access to schools ‘using the distance between the child’s permanent address and the school, measured in a straight line using ordnance survey address point data.
How old your child should be when they start school
Most children begin primary school at the start of the school year in which they reach school age (5 years old). All schools must admit children from the September following their 4th birthday.
A school year runs from September to the following August.
Starting school in September 2019
Applications for transfer to primary school in September 2019 opened on Monday 5 November 2018 and closed at midnight on Tuesday 15 January 2019. The Local Authority processed applications between 15 January and 15 April 2019.
From 12 June 2019 all primary, infant and junior schools will take over responsibility for admissions for this year group by following the normal In Year procedure, and will manage their waiting lists from this date.
Parents wishing to apply to our school should now fill out an IYCAF and return it directly to our school.
The only exception is where Kent parents have not yet applied to any Kent school – they should instead complete a Post Reallocation Form which must then be sent directly to the KCC In Year team firstname.lastname@example.org (Admissions, Room 2.24, Kent County Council, Sessions House, County Hall, Maidstone, ME14 1XQ.) The Post Reallocation Form is for KCC residents only – anyone from out of county should complete the IYCAF and send to the Office Manager, St John’s CEP School, Bayham Road, Sevenoaks, Kent, TN13 3XD or email a copy to email@example.com)
Starting school in September 2020
For children starting school in 2020, applications will open again in November 2019. Please refer to the Local Authority’s website for further details nearer the time.
We will also be hosting several open mornings for parents of children due to start school in September 2020 for a school tour and Q & A session with the Head and Reception teacher.
Please check our website later in the year or register at Eventbrite www.eventbrite.co.uk
