History at St John's

At St John's, our History curriculum plays an important role in bringing our school vision and values to life. We inspire children to develop a curiosity about the past, exploring the history of Britain and the wider world, while helping them understand how the past has shaped the present.

Through learning about significant people, events and civilisations, children build a secure sense of chronology and develop a lifelong love of learning. They discover the rich diversity of human experiences, beliefs and cultures, gaining a deeper understanding of themselves and their place in an ever-changing world.

History provides meaningful opportunities for children to reflect on our Christian values of tolerance, compassion, forgiveness and trust. As they explore the choices people made in the past, they learn to appreciate different perspectives, show empathy towards others, recognise the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation, and understand how trust has helped shape communities and relationships throughout history.

Our History curriculum encourages children to think critically by asking thoughtful questions, investigating evidence and considering different viewpoints. They learn to weigh up information, make informed judgements and explain their ideas with confidence, using evidence to support their conclusions.

Children are encouraged to communicate their historical understanding in a variety of creative and engaging ways, often working collaboratively with others. Through these experiences, they develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to become thoughtful, respectful and informed citizens who understand the importance of learning from the past to help shape a better future.
