Curriculum

French

At St John’s, we believe that languages are not just a form of communication, they are an insight into other cultures. The ability to speak another language deepens our understanding of the world around us and encourages acceptance and inclusivity. We hope to inspire a passion for languages, as well as a curiosity to know more about the French-speaking countries around us.

The children will begin with the basic vocabulary in Year 3, building up to more conversational French in Year 6, ready for their trip to Normandy. Building on the basis of the Spanish they have already learned, French will widen their opportunities and prepare them for further language study.

Alongside language learning, we will learn about traditions, stories and songs from France and other French-speaking countries. Together, we will read modern French children’s literature, as well as traditional tales. Throughout the year, we will discuss French traditions and how they are celebrated around the world.

The children will be able to understand and communicate ideas in both speech and writing, using knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary. Our French lessons will be based on key vocabulary, which will be taught through speaking, writing, listening and reading exercises, as well as some fun language games!

French Club will run each week, where the children from both KS1 and KS2 are invited to come and sing French songs, play vocabulary games and read some French stories together.
